  Qualifications for Membership in NABIE

In addition to the engineering degree (from an accredited school of engineering) and evidence of professional engineering registration, NABIE members must also have actual hands-on experience in engineering involving inspection, investigation, and consultation relating to the structural components and mechanical systems of commercial and residential buildings. Membership is in the following categories: Intern, Professional, Executive, and Diplomate. In each category the requirements include standards relating to experience in engineering practice plus experience in building inspection engineering.

Membership in NABIE also requires a minimum number of buildings inspected or evaluated. Increasingly more inspection experience is required for full membership and diplomates. Candidates for Professional Executive and Diplomate status are peer-reviewed for their abilities to perform and report on a number of previously completed inspections. An Admissions Committee reviews these documents as well as evaluating references from other engineers who know about the candidate's work.

Three other documents are reviewed in the candidate's portfolio: evidence of the degree in engineering; evidence of the license as a professional engineer (has passed a professional engineering examination as administered by all 50 states) and is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.*

*Registered Architects who are members of the American Institute of Architects (AlA), or other national architectural society satisfactory to the Admission Committee may petition the Admissions Committee for admission by providing evidence of experience and qualifications comparable to that required above. Admission requires recommendations by the Admissions Committee and approval by the board.
